Alabama Appleseed is proud to honor Regina Benjamin, MD, MBA, and founder and CEO of BayouClinic/Gulf States Health Policy Center in Bayou La Batre, Alabama with our 2021 Brewer/Torbert Public Service Award, given to an individual in Alabama who has demonstrated substantial commitment to public service and improving the lives of Alabamians.  

The Brewer/Torbert Public Service Award is annually awarded by Alabama Appleseed, a non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1999 whose mission is to work to achieve justice and equity for all Alabamians. Dr. Benjamin has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to equity through her dedication to providing and expanding health care to rural Alabama communities. Dr. Benjamin also served as the 18th U.S. Surgeon General from 2009 to 2013.
